 There are two types of upholstered sofas. An overstuffed piece is completly covered in upholstery, while an exposed frame piece has parts of the frame showing, such as bare wooden arms or legs.
One sign upholstered sofas are of good quality is that if they have a pattern in them, that it matches on the cushions and the frames. However it doesn't have to only look good it has to be well made. The inner constuction of upholstered sofas determines its comfort and quality. Always look for a lable that is attached to the sofa. There is a law that requries the contents of the items be listed. Often, lables give ways on care of the fabric.

The frame should be made of kiln-dried hardwood. Oak, walnut, and teak are some of the woods that could be used. The frame should be straight, with no sign of warping. All the joints should be glued and double or tripled doweled. Coil springs are used in upholstered sofas. About eight springs are used for one chair seat. The reason being that they are placed at a distance from each other, is so they don't rub on one another. Coil spings provide the most comfortable lift.

Another important part of upholstered sofas is the stuffing and padding. A layer of burlap or canves is stiched over the springs to make the sofa soft to the touch. There is a wide variaty of filling material such as polyurethane foam, polyester, rubberized hair, foam rubber, feathers or down.
Finest quality upholstered sofas have another layer of cotten felt or fiberfill between the stuffing and the upholstery fabric. Most sofas usually get pretty good usage, so the fabric should be tightly woven and durable. Synthetics, wool, cotten and linen are commonly used. Vinyl and leather are also very sturdy materials for upholstered sofas. Also note silk and other delicate fabrics should only be used on upholstered sofas that won't recieve much wear.
So just remember, they should be not only comfortable to sit on, they should be comfortable to lie on as well. Because you never know when it has to be your bed!
